Highway 372 out of Bend open to Sparks Lake?

We would like to kayak Sparks Lake this weekend (May 11-13th), but checking Oregon DOT there is a notice that "the snow gate at MT Bachelor on the Cascades Lakes Highway is closed for the season". MP 21.98, 5/4/2018 alert. Does this mean the highway going west is closed or that the entrance road to Mt Bachelor is closed?

Thank you!

Yes its still closed.

Oooops..update! Target to open May 10th!

Even better lake is Hosmer Lake.

But none of these lakes on a summer weekend. Way too busy.

I've done Lake Billy Chinook

and Prineville Reservoir

in April/May. Nicer time, less crazy speed boats to mess up the experience.

Lake Billy Chinook will be warmer though, lower elevation.

Suttle Lake, people are out and about. Doable right now. Often winds from the west.

Mainly just slow fishing boats out now.

Hi! Keep an eye on the road conditions page posted above (https:/…news-info-and-closures) - sounds like you will be able to access the road by this weekend.

Sparks is terrific, make sure to explore the fingers. It could still be cold so be prepared with layers, and plenty of water.

Agree that Hosmer is also nice - I don't think one is any better than the other, necessarily. They are just different. Both get pretty busy during summer weekends.

Thank you.

Is there still snow on the ground at the boat launching areas at Sparks & Hosmer?

Sparks is yes just as nice as Hosmer. We just had a bad weekend summer experience as Sparks has a much larger parking area and the crowd was different from Hosmer. More of a party scene with people blasting their choice of music, camping on the beaches, human feces in the bushes.

But you won't encounter that now.

Hosmer kayak/canoe launch area is real small and tight. But right now you won't have any issue either place.

Snow at the launch sites? I doubt it. Never know!

All park services need more money to patrol these highly popular places.

We will checkout both places and if too cold or windy, we will go to Billy Chinook.

Thanks again to all.

Hi,

Just returned; As of May 14, Sparks still snow bound, Elk lake windy, little Cultus "didn't float our boat", so we went back Sun River area and put in at Harper's Bridge and went down the Deschutes until the take out point at NF 600. Very nice 3 hour float.

The Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway is astonishing. Just pass the entrance to MT Bachelor, bright brilliant snow. (thus Sparks lake area to Elk lake snow on ground). Elk lake loop was clear though.

All of this a relatively short drive from 97.

That is great and a good decision. Still real early for that area. Often is closed until June.

Interesting out by where we were at Camp Sherman Suttle Lake was real calm with kayakers and fishing boats.

Glad your trip was nice. Good weather but Sunday was better...some winds at times though.

Great area. Sounds like you had a great time!
