Deciding on a Home Base Area on the Bruce Peninsula

Hello, all...thanks for your time and consideration.

We're planning a family trip to the Bruce Peninsula and I was hoping for your recommendations regarding a "home base" area from which to make day trips for 5-6 days.

We're experienced travel trailer campers (two parents and two older elementary aged kids) who enjoy a variety of things when traveling:

-1 to 2 mile hikes but nothing too serious

-playtime in the water

-natural and historical sites

-bookstores

-shopping/antiques

-food/wine/cider

-etc

A little bit of everything makes everyone happy and leads to well-rounded and enjoyable trips for us.

Any part of the peninsula that you'd recommend to keep a diversity of such experiences within a reasonable drive of base camp?

Thanks and happy travels. :)

Hi Granlobo;

Are your plans for this summer, or the summer of 2019 ?

Best Regards

Thank you...for the summer of 2019...next summer.

We'd appreciate your insights...I'm not sure if finding a place around Tobermory perhaps "pigeonholes" us into more water/shoreline/hiking than we'd normally prefer...but concerned that being more toward the base of the peninsula and closer to several towns/sights/etc would make for an unpleasantly long journey up to the national parks from there.

Thanks!

Lion's Head or Miller's Lake have a ton of cottages for rent and are strategically located on the peninsula, within a short drive to everything. We usually stay between Miller's Lake and Tobermory, on Lake Huron side (warmer water). If camping, there are several campgrounds just before you reach Tobermory.

Last fall we rented a cottage just outside of Wiarton (we were hiking) ... From here we had easy access to Sauble Beach (amazing) and you can access many sections of the Bruce Trail for hikes which can be easy or difficult. It's also easy to get to Tobermory from here (we went one afternoon). Wiarton is reasonably close to Owen Sound as well (we had dinner in Owen Sound a couple of times).

We also stayed in Wiarton in the Fall...best part about visiting in Fall is that traffic is apparently pretty bad in Summer. Otherwise, Wiarton provided excellent access to both hikes on the peninsula and to the many towns along Lake Huron's shore. Sauble has a great beach but if you're looking for more in the way of nice towns and restaurants, drive further south.
