Help!?

We’ve decided to make a quick day trip to Kitty Hawk. We’re bringing 3 little ones. 8, 6, and 3. Is there a good public beach? A place we can just park and hang out in the ocean for a bit? We’re going to see the Flight Monument and all that too. How about the best restaurant for a family?

This is spur of the moment... we are going to Virginia Beach from Chicago and we want to say we went to North Carolina too! Lol Thanks!

There are 50 miles of public beach more or less from Corolla/Carova down to Hatteras. There are some areas that have parking where you can park and access the ocean and beach in Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. These would be the areas I would suggest. I would suggest using the Kitty Hawk bathhouse beach access because there is a lifeguard there and they have parking, rest rooms and showers. Get on the 5 lane rt 168 (we call it the bypass) and go south in Kitty Hawk to the traffic light at Kitty Hawk Rd. You will see the Kitty Hawk post office on the left and a 7-11 on your right at that light. Turn left (east) and go to the end of the road. You will see the Black Pelican restaurant on the right - turn right and then make a right into the bathhouse parking lot. When you are done eat at that restaurant - very good and neat place.

The Black Pelican used to be the lifeguard boathouse used by the life saving station and it used to be on the oceanside of the road there. It was moved many years ago and expanded to a restaurant. The upper part (closed to the public) used to be the telegraph station for Kitty Hawk and it was where word that the Wright Bros successfully flew with controlled power flight for the first time was sent out and why everyone thought it happened in Kitty Hawk. It actually happened at the monument which was not Kitty Hawk back then but is now know as Kill Devil Hills.

Roam around the restaurant and imagine what it was like back in the early 1900's.
