Ski areas in N.C. - coming from Gatlinburg

We have a trip planned back to Ober Gatlinburg to do some skiing. We creatures of comfort - and like knowing the area we'll be spending time in - especially with the possiblity of snowing conditions.

With that said, during our next trip to Ober, we'd like to take a day or two to try one of the larger North Carolina ski areas like Sugar or Beech. By visiting that area, maybe a future trip could be planned there. Is one a closer distance or better driving from Gatlinburg? I'm aware of Cat around Maggie Valley - but not sure if it is much larger than Ober.

Thanks all!

Both Beech and Sugar are in the same area about 7 miles apart. Sugar is on one side of Banner Elk and Beech is up the mountain on the other side of Banner Elk. Unless you are coming from Roan Mtn., Tenn and Elk Park ,NC (which is not common) you will pass by Sugar Mountain on the way to Beech Mountain.
