Beware of Ice Cream Vendors Ripping off Tourists

Beware of an ice cream vendor trading under the banner 'Kati Bros', in a yellow van, on the front at Grand Baei. He tried to charge me 420 rupee for a single ice cream, that's about 7.50 GBP. This is outright tourist exploitation. Other vendors were charging only 35 rupee! A nearby beach vendor intervened on our behalf, he was very upset that tourists are being ripped off as it is dishonest and bad for business in general.

May I add your post to the topic on Scams in Mauritius in the Top Questions as a warning to other travellers?

Unfortunately the ice cream scam with tourists has been common for years. 🙁

@ Mufy, sorry to hear that. The vast majority of Mauritians (as well as locals of any other country) are honest and hardworking, as reflected by the other seller who intervened.

Hope this incident didn’t ruin your experience of our wonderful island and good on you for calling them out. The more that tourists refuse to accept being taken for a ride, the less likely are those trying to take the pi$$!!
