Solo Female Traveller - Advice needed

Hello,

I am visiting friends in Addis in November and want to travel to Bahar Dar and Gondar for a few days on my own. My friends in Addis think I ought to book with an agency so that I have an escort & tour guide during my time in Bahar Dar and Gondar. Is this necessary? If so, I'd rather use local people in Bahar Dar and Gondar. Do you have any advice?....regards, HMD

Correct you do not need a guide.

Book your own flights or book sky or selam bus in Addis.

Big discount on domestic flights if u fly in on Ethiopian.

If you are flying Ethiopian from Dublin once you have the Ethiopian Int ticket eg from their website, ring Eth office in Dublin with ticket locator ref or number and book dom flights on phone NOT on website...

Sending u a message too.

Also a good idea to buy new 7th edition of Bradt Guide to Eth when it comes out Oct 9th........you can pre order it on Bradt website..

Thank you for the prompt reply! I am indeed flying from Dublin to Addis with Ethiopian airlines. Will also be flying from Addis to Bahar Dar with them. Thank you for the recommendation on the book. I'll get it.

I presume its easy enough to get on tours for Lake Tania and the falls when you are a solo traveller?

Hi Solo female traveler.

I am also a solo female (Irish traveler) currently residing in Spain: I'm considering doing a tour in Ethiopia "The lost Tribes", staring in Oct 12th. I have travelled solo to other developing countries but remain a tad concerned about travel in east Africa - how are you feeling about things?

Thanks a lot, Ursula

Hi,

I will only be travelling on my own for part of the trip. I think it will be ok ...though I will take the usual precautionary measures especially at night and adhere to local advice. If I feel slightly overwhelmed at any time, then I will probably hire a local female guide to accompany me. Will also aim to learn some basic Amharic over the coming weeks...

Are you travelling with an organised tour company like Exodus or Explore - or are you doing a local tour?

regards,

McD.

Hi, thanks for the prompt response. I'm hoping to do the tour with peregrine. It may be full already though. I'm doing flight research just in case it isn't. I had planned originally to be in east Africa for 6 months doing volunteer work. Alas I'm still here in Spain waiting for a volunteer position to open up. I think this Ethiopia trip will give me a taste of Africa travel though..my first tour group ever!! What r u planning? Best regards Ursula.

Hi,

Check out explore (www.explore.co.uk). They have upcoming trips to Ethiopia. You don't have to fly out with the group from London - u can join them in Addis. I have travelled with them before and they are good.

I'm visiting Addis, Bahar Dar, Gondar, Lalibella and doing a 3-4 day trek in the Simien mountains.

Hi, I wonder how did your trip go ?

I am travelling to Ethiopia in Jan 2016 and taking a tour with Awaze Tours for 14 days. I hope to then take a trip to Oma region.

I am a 67 year old women ......... any hints would be welcome , please. I am travelling alone, unless others join Historical tour.

Thanks in advance.
