Location for overnight between Great Sand Dune and Santa Fe?
Save

Hi!

I'm finalizing a road trip next month ending in Santa Fe focusing on nature and national parks. I'm spending three days in Great Sand Dune and had planned to go to Capulin Volcano NM to spend the night before continuing on to Santa Fe.

Then I realize that Taos is in a perfect position between the two sites.

Would you recommend that I forgo the volcano and spend the day in Taos instead? I'd be arriving 10/8 and leaving 10/9.

Thanks!

Taos Pueblo would have been interesting except that as other people have said it's closed due to COVID. Also, if I do choose Taos, is the High Road still accessible this late in the season?

I'm wondering if it makes sense to stop in Taos, take one of the two roads to Valles Caldera to get the site in, an then go to Santa Fe from there. I do want to have some time for Santa Fe in the evening though as I'm leaving from ABQ the next day.

Finally, Jemez Hot Springs looks AWFULLY tempting near Valles Caldera...except it's a long haul from Great Sand Dune (4 hours) with minimal time to see Tahoe.

Skip Taos. It can be fairly similar to Santa Fe, especially since the Pueblo is closed and it sounds like nothing else there is on your radar. Do the volcano.

I decided to pass through Taos and continue down the High/Low roads through Valles Caldera to the hot springs, staying at Giggling Springs. Long day but only 1+ hours from Santa Fe the next day so I get a full day.
