wine sales sunday

hi there gang...believe there are restrictions on wine/liquor sales on a sunday. am arriving (self catering nr franschhoek) from europe late saturday afternoon just before xmas. can we at least buy a couple of bottles of wine on a sunday? directly at vineyards or even from restaurant in necessary. extra cost isn´t a consideration if we´ll be "dry" otherwise. any advice much appreciated.

Go and have a nice lunch at a vinyard, most of the time you can buy their wine overthere. On a sunday you can buy wine at a liquire stores, but not in the supermarkets.

hi..thx for info. the idea of renting a quiet cottage was TO AVOID having to dine out after a very long flight and a stressful work period for us. xmas i believe is very very busy in winelands and we really dont want to join the hordes. rather bad news to hear that we´ll only be tasting that great wine IF we can still get a booking somewhere. we´d been advised (as a couple looking for peace and romantic break) to steer clear of xmas dining events. liquor stores dont seem to trade sunday...so the question is still.....is there anyway of buying some wine??? cheers - lorraine

Ask the owners of the place where you are staying to buy some for you & put it on your account. Alternatively buy some on line from Cybercellar.com & get them to deliver it for you. They are based in Franschhoek. I've done that on several occasions.

Failing that, buy some at the airport or scrounge a couple of bottles from the cabin crew on your flight. Even if you have to put up with German wine it will be better than nothing!! ;-)

You can buy wine from any winery that is open on a Sunday. Some of which include Morêson, Solms Delta, Vrede and Lust, Haute Cabriere, Grande Provence to name but a few. Don't bother buying overpriced wine at the airport.

Bottle stores are not open on a sunday unless they have a special lisence for trading on a sunday. There is however a central wine place as you enter Franschoek (Franschoek Cellar) on your right which stores most of the regions wine in their cellars. They are open on a sunday and that will allow you buy even more and with a bigger variety as well. Have a look at: www.franshhoek.org.za for more info.
