Fall LeavesTrip Niagara Falls /Quebec Cty/Maine/Boston route

I have read many of the postings in the New England forum but did not see info on our plan, I am looking for advice on a fall trip that would include both Canada & US, late Sept. early Oct. We will fly into Detroit, pick up a car and head from Windsor to the Canadian side of Niagara. From there Montreal and Quebec City. Crossing over to the US to Maine/Acadia and then down to Vermont/New Hampshire, Cape Cod/Boston.

We have at least 2 weeks for the trip and would prefer to stay in a few locations more than one nite.

I would appreciate input on routing, suggested overnites and any other helpful tidbits.

Thank you in advance!

Are you planning on a 1-way rental with drop off in Boston, or returning to Detroit to fly out?

Unless there's something you really want to see in Detroit or Windsor, I'd recommend flying into Buffalo, NY, as its much closer to Niagara Falls.

NF only needs 1 day/1 night. Montreal is about 8 hours from NF, no thoughts of visiting Toronto or Ottawa?

What kinds of things do you like to see and do when on vacation?

Note that the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Acadia/Bar Harbor are very busy the first 2 weeks of October as it is peak foliage season, so getting lodging in those locations might be your top priority in setting an itinerary.

Thanks for your response. Our arrival is based on locations AK airline flies into, so we would be picking up a car and dropping off. Toronto is a beautiful city, but I have never seen Quebec City, so it was a focus. We are active seniors who like to hike, and also visit some of the historical sites. We live on the west coast and so this is probably the only time we will do this road trip.

Ok, assuming you arrive early enough to get to NF that first day:

Day 1, arrive, drive to NF, stay overnight

Day 2 - drive to Montrreal (all day drive)

Day 3 - Montreal

Day 4 - drive to Quebec City

Day 5 - Quebec City

Day 6 - drive to New Hampshire White Mountains - look at Lincoln or North Conway or Jackson for lodging.

Day 7, 8 - White Mountains

Day 9 - drive to Acadia/Bar Harbor (5-6 hours)

Day 10, 11 - Acadia

Day 12 - drive to Boston (5-6 hours) return rental car, you don't need it or want to pay for parking in the city

Day 13 - Boston

Day 14 - Boston, fly out

If you have more days, you could spend some time on the southern coast of Maine (Portland, Kennebunkport, Ogunquit) and Portsmouth, NH. If you want to include Cape Cod, allow at least 2 full days, plus one day to visit Marthas Vineyard or Nantucket.
