what are some of the beaches for sunbathing as well as swimming in the ocean? The beaches can be within 40/45 mins of Portsmouth.

In New Hampshire: Hampton, Rye, and New Castle--basically, all along the coast. In Maine, Ogunquit, Wells, others. There are Massachusetts beaches within that range, also.

The ocean is cold.

What is the preferred beach for young professionals with no kids? Clean, quiet beach, and maybe a bar in walking distance.

If you are vacationing in northern New England anytime between June-Sept, you will find children on the beaches.

If are happy with just an hour or two of sun, in the late afternoon the beach population usually thins out.

Clean/quiet and bar are the tough pair. If it is a big and desirable enough Beach to support a bar, the well probably be a lot of other people and commerce. If it is quiet there may not be enough activity to support a stand alone bar. Hampton will give you the bar, as well Ogunquit, Wells and others, but you may not be alone on the beach. Find the Beach you want, then spend the evening in Portsmouth for the great bars, dining and haven for young professionals.
