I hear Magpie's is a great restaurant in St. Charles. Are there any others that might be recommended (and family friendly)?
St. Charles is not generally known for as many good restaurants as St. Louis. That being said, Magpie's is very good, somewhat small/quaint, I've never had dinner there only lunch. Along the Main St there is also Lewis and Clark's (beware the hot beef sandwish, it is HOT!) and Trailhead Brewing Co (gets to be more of a bar crowd in the evening). The locals like El Maguey for Mexican (near Harverster and highway 70) though I struggle with their white runny cheese that they put on everything--they do have a good salsa. I prefer Chimi's Authentic Mexican over off Jungermann Rd south of 70--they are normally empty but really serve good Mexican. SmashBurger on Zumbehl south of highway 70 draws a great crowd. Avoid Chucky Cheese--they have gone very downhill. To keep the kid's entertained try Dave and Buster's right over the river off Earth City Expressways south of 70, they also get a bit of a bar crowd at night but have a lot of games for kids and adults that give out tickets to trade for junk---makes kids happy. If you're okay with a chain try Culvers, they have good burgers and ice cream for the kids. If you're looking for something more expensive Shogun Japanese Steakhouse of Zumbehl south of 70 is fun, get reservations and the kids can watch the chefs cook for you, they do most of the "tricks." The best frozen custard in St. Charles IMO is Deters which has just opened a new location off highway 94 and Friedens/Zumbehl--take Friedens east. I've only eaten at the more southern 94 location in Weldon Springs.
I second the recommendation on Magpie's, Lewis & Clark's, and Trailhead.
My daughters love the appetizers at Trailhead (warm soft pretzels w/ cheese & mustard to dip into, Crab-Artichoke Dip with fried pita bread for diping, etc. The BBQ Chicken pizza is really good too. If the weather is nice, ask to sit on one of the outdoor patios.
I must be one of the only people I know not to have been to Magpies. Everyone I know who's been there has said it's great. My parents rave about it, and go regularly.
If you go to the Ameristar Casino, staw away from the Sports Bar. I've heard the Falcon Diner is good there though.
We were highly impressed with Hendricks BBQ. The food, the service, and the price was good.
I have a question, not a reply. We will be in St. Charles for our 30th anniversary the end of June. We have two small dogs that travel with us. Are there any restaurants that will accommodate us with the dogs in an enclosed cart? Outside seating is fine.
