Upcoming Ole Miss game - September 3rd

I'm flying into Jackson for the BYU/Ole Miss game and was wondering if there were any hotel recommendations between Jackson and Oxford. I think we'd like to get as close to Oxford as possible but are open to suggestions. In my search so far, it looks like hotel rates are pretty high in Oxford for home games. We'll be staying Friday and Saturday night. I found some pretty decent rates in Grenada but would welcome any other recommendations

Also, any recommendations for restaurants along the route or in Oxford please let me know. Also, recommendations on navigating Oxford on game day i.e. parking, traffic, etc would be helpful as well. We're planning on getting to Oxford early Saturday morning to check things out. I'm looking forward to experiencing some good southern food and football.

Hotels in Oxford are booked up. You can rent a condo in Oxford from OM fans if you want to stay in town. Here's a link to the OM game day forum. Contact some of the posters if you would prefer something in town. Why don't you click on forums up top and then insiders forum. You can register for free and ask all kinds of questions. I would be glad to help you there too.

You need to be close to the Square which is where all the fun joints are. You can walk from the Square to the Grove and Stadium in 15 minutes on flat ground not up and down hills. It's an easy walk. When you find out where you are going to stay Friday night I will help you with parking in Oxford. I would park near the Square and walk to the game. You could have lunch and shop around the Square before the game and then walk there and back. Ajax is good country food. Rib Cage has good BBQ. Proud Larry's is fun. City Grocery is the best place in town and you could have lunch there before the game. McEwen's is a new place in the old Waltz location. The owner of City Grocery, John Currence, has a Big Bad Breakfast place N of the Square and next door is Snack Shop for lunch or dinner. When you get to Oxford you will come to a red light and Jackson Ave. going to the left. Go straight ahead and get off at the first Exit which is Coliseum Dr. Get off on right but turn back left and cross the highway. Take your first right by the Basketball Practice Facility. I can't ever remember that street's name. You will see the football stadium straight ahead. Go to dead end at All American Dr. turn right and go past N end of stadium. You will run into the Grove. Go to the left on University Ave. and you will go past the Grove on your right and run into the Circle. Go around the circle and you will see The Lyseum which is the oldest building on campus. The James Meredith riot started in the Circle. There's a monument of him behind the Lyseum. The street you came in on at The Grove is University Ave. Take it back E all the way to Lamar. Take a right on Lamar and go about 6 blocks and take a right on Old Taylor. Go about 3 blocks and you run dead into Faulkner's home. You can drive up the gravel road in front and park and go in and visit. Go back to Lamar and go N past University Ave. two blocks and park. You are now on The Square. The building on your left is Square Books which is very famous. John Grisham has a home in Oxford. You passed it on the right just before you got to town. It sits off to the right on a hill and it's easy to see. It's just before the car dealership before you get to the first red light. He's a frequent visitor to Oxford.

Park and walk around the Square. City Grocery is two doors down W of Square Books. Neilson's to your right on the Square is a nice department store. If you walk past City Grocery on the left you will see Waltz Restaurant after you pass the Pizza joint. Going around the Square you will find Ajax which is a good country food joint. There are a couple of nice ladie's shops on that side of the Square. Downtown Grill is on N side of Square. They have a nice bar upstairs. There's a Rebel junk store around on the N side if you want to buy a Rebel souvenir to take home. Go N on Lamar and Lenora's is on the left. Have dinner at City Grocery. CG has a nice bar upstairs and you can sit outside if you like. I hope you have a great trip.

I would stay in Batesville if you don't get a condo in Oxford. Another choice is Tupelo but that's an hour E of Oxford. Here's a few places in Batesville that should be good for the night. Either one is fine. The Holiday Inn has a lounge with appetizers. I would eat dinner in Oxford and drive back to Batesville if you don't find a place in Oxford. It's about 30 minutes and 4 lane. MHP are rough on speeding and drinking and driving.

Holiday Inn @ 210 Power Drive, Batesville, MS 662 – 563 – 1234.

Hampton Inn @ 103 Lakewood Drive, Batesville, MS 662 – 578 – 5555.

Hickory Pit is a great place to stop in Jackson, MS for good BBQ.

Hickory Pit @ 1491 Canton Mart Road, Jackson, MS 601 - 956 - 7079.

If you stop near Grenada, MS go to High on the Hog or Jake and Rips for good road food.

High on the Hog BBQ @ 711 Lakeview Dr., Grenada, MS 662 - 226 - 5635.

Jake and Rips @ at 1525 Sunset Dr., Grenada, MS 662 - 227 - 9955.

We haven't settled yet on a place to stay. Is there a way to find out more about the condos? That might be a good idea.

What size condo do you need. There are 1, 2 and 3 BR condo's for rent for game weekends in Oxford by their owners. Go to this link. You will have to register but it's free. Get a user name and ask questions. I see a 1 BR for the BYU game. How many folks are in your group.

Had a cancellation for BYU game! 1 bedroom, 1 bath at Oxford Square. Gated. Queen size bed, futon and double air mattress with trolley from clubhouse to game! Non smoking, 2 night minimum. $600.00 for long weekend includes the Monday holiday!!! E-mail lmitch6844@aol.com for more info and photos.

Thank you Axle, we ended up getting a great deal on Priceline for the Holiday Inn in Batesville. Any recommendations for parking on game day? We're planning on heading into Oxford early Saturday morning for breakfast and then we'll spend the rest of the day enjoying the town. Is there a central place we can park for the entire day that's close enough to all the restaurants and the stadium? Thank you!

Here's a link to Ole Miss Game Parking. I would take the # 278 bypass on the S side of Oxford to Larmar and park near the Square if possible. There are several churches located near Van Buren and the Square that sell spots in their church parking lots. If you get there early you can park there or on the E side of the Square behind Neilsen's Department Store. You can also find parking N of the Square behind the county office building. And there's a lot behind the new brick buildings across the street from the county building. You can park near the Square, shop, visit and have lunch then walk to the Grove in about 15 minutes.
