Sleeping overnight at Michigan rest areas

Is it legal to sleep overnight in an RV or small truck at Michigan rest areas? I might arrive before sunset and not be able to get a campsite in the dark.

Evidently not. I've never tried it (that I remember) in Michigan ... I have another places, usually 24-hour rest areas on toll roads.

Maybe someone else will chime in who has actual experience with either successfully sleeping or being woken by the police.

I successfully slept in one long ago. The Department of Transportation web site does not say you cannot, but that doesn't mean that it isn't posted at the stops (haven't looked).

Give 517-373-2090 a call in the morning and find out for sure.

The above makes sense. I've never stayed "overnight" at a rest area, but I've gotten a couple hours sleep here and there. Definitely while towing a camper or RV, I've climbed in back and slept for a couple/few hours.

I would doubt the stay limit would be heavily enforced. Michigan just doesn't have that kind of budget to follow that. Rarely see state police patrolling the highways as it is.

Can't recall seeing any signs in the two we stopped at this weekend on a trip to the UP.

The entire purpose of rest stops is to keep sleepy drivers off of the road. Setting up a tent, BBQ, fire pit and game of cornhole would be frowned upon, but sleeping inside a parked RV, tractor trailer or even car should not be an issue.
