Lexington in April? Keeneland?

Hello, we are thinking about visiting Lexington for a long weekend the first part of April. We have 2 children 2 and 6. Can you tell me about keeneland and do you think taking children is a good idea? Seeing the horses and a race could be fun? Other horse parks you could recommend would be great too. Thanks

Keeneland with kids of that age is a little tricky. First, you need a nice day. If the weather is bad it just won't work. Secondly, you need to locate your self right. You should definitely take the kids through the paddock where the horses are saddled. Resist the temptation to walk into the grandstand building. Keeneland gets very crowded, and the apron between the grandstand and the track can get pretty wild: tons of college kids spilling beer on each other. Stay on the back side of the grandstand and go down to the very end. There is a nice grassy area there where you can spread out on a blanket or pitch a couple of portable chairs. You can walk up to the rail to see the horses and watch the races. You can pop into the end of the grandstand to place a bet, get food or drink.

Do any of the local hotels run a shuttle to the racetrack? We are thinking of coming in for good Friday for one day.

Not that we are aware of; however, Lextran (Lexington's bus service) offers bus service to Keeneland from the Transit Center http://lextran.com/keeneland as well as trolley service to Keeneland with a stop at the Hyatt Regency on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays: http://lextran.com/route-maps/keeneland> Note that this was last year's information and they have not updated it yet, so there may be changes. You can call Lextran at 859-253-4636 for more information.

Aside from Keeneland, you might enjoy the Kentucky Horse Park just north of Lexington.

You would definitely want to stop at the Kentucky Horse Park, as it has all kinds of horses, including famous retired racehorses like Funny Cide and Cigar. Here is the KHP website:

Also, you should note that a number of tour buses operate in Lexington, including one that operates out of KHP. That one goes to Keeneland (at least it used to do so), as well as other attractions (when I went on it a few years ago, it also went to WinStar Farms, one of the most successful thoroughbred farms in the world).
