We will be staying in Deerfield for 3 days for sport competition. We will have a car. We will have our afternoons open. Any ideas on activity and any dining options?
We are not big on sushi or vegetarian, other than that anything is fine. Will be staying at Embassy Suites Chicago North Shore. We also would have 2 more full day staying at downtown Chicago. So any activity excluding downtown would be great.
Thank you for your help.

Feel free to PM me if you want more suggestions.
Note - Lake Cook Road east of your hotel has road construction.
Thank you so much for your wonderful suggestions. As I mentioned earlier, we will be busy first half of the day, but after lunch we are open. Since we spend more time in downtown area the following two days, would you please suggest not too tiring activity for the second half of the day in Deerfield and maybe northern part of Chicago or around?
There's a tremendous amount of things you could do near Deerfield.
Chicago Botanic Gardens
Great America, both the theme park and water park, if you're there after they open for the season later this month
Shopping at Gurnee Mills
Illinois Beach State Park in Zion
All of those are within about half an hour of Deerfield and are pretty big tourist attractions. There's other bike paths and hiking as well.
One of the restaurants Dave mentioned is Francesco's. I have not been in a while, but it used to be so crowded you had to be there like right when they opened to avoid a wait. They did not take reservations. It's tiny so once five or six tables showed up, it was full and you had to wait until someone finished dinner to get a table.
the city of highwood is a major dining destination of the northshore.....
also downtowns highland park and lake forest are nice destinations in their own right:
as is downtown evanston:
or. just tie them together and just take a scenic drive along sheridan road:
if you'll be here during the summer, consider going here:
weather permitting, visit any of the lake michigan beaches along the northshore. note: after memorial day, you must pay to enter most beaches on the northshore. exceptions are illinois state beach, gilson beach in wilmette and a few secret spots scattered along the shore. see the sticky in the upper right corner of this page....
if you enjoy paddling, not far is this:
