How early can we go to find warm water in ocean

We spent our fiest vacation in Venice in April/May and loved it (thanks in part to help we got on this forum!).

For 2017 we are thinking about a much earlier visit and wondered what would be the earliest we might expect the ocean and pools be warm enough to swim in? We would love to travel late January to early February.

You probably need 72 to swim and you are looking at 60's. Look at attached table for St Peterburg to the north and Naples to the south.

It depends on the year. I was in the water a couple of years ago in January, but it was 86 outside - very unusual.

Usually, about mid March.

February is hit and miss. It can still freeze in February at night in Central Florida, but there can be some nice 80 degree days too.

Very helpful. Thanks. I'm wondering if swimming pools (unheated) would be somewhat warmer than the ocean?

It isn't the ocean where you will be swimming. It is the Gulf. The Gulf is more sensitive to changes in air temperature than the ocean. The same for the pool - is it screened? What way does it face? etc. etc.

If I were to go in an unheated pool in January or February on a day that was not very warm for that time of year, alcohol would be involved:)

Something else to consider is the cost of the vacation.

High season (Jan/Feb/March) means higher lodging rates, more lines at restaurants, crowded beaches etc.

The water will not be as warm...some pools are heated.

Things to think about..

Thank you all for your very helpful responses. This year we visited in late April and I thought next year we might consider an earlier trip. Now we may well rethink this, perhaps traveling again in April.

After April 15 many snowbirds leave to go back home.
