Metal detecting in Pensacola?

I'm taking a trip to the Gulf Coast next week and would like any information you can give about treasure hunting on public beaches in Pensacola.

First of all, is metal detecting allowed or is the beach a protected area?

Are there public beaches or are most of the fronts privately owned?

What are the beach conditions now since the hurricane?

I appreciate any responses. Thanks so much!

1. Re: Metal detecting in Pensacola?

From doing further research I realize now that it would be insensitive to do detecting in an area hard hit by a hurricane.

We like looking for old artifacts or some spare change, not going through people's belongings!

So please disregard my post. I think we'll go to Biloxi or further east in Florida. I do want to swim in the pristine Florida beaches, though - I'v swam in Galveston for years and man, that's muddy!
