Melbourne or Cocoa Beach? Spring Break with Family

My family is taking the auto train into Sanford (2 adults and 2 boys (8 & 10)). Looking for a good place to stay. Would like to stay on the beach, and have the ability to daytrip?

What location is better? Melbourne or Cocoa? Someone mentioned New Smyrna Beach? how is that?

Which has more to do for a family? Which is cleaner, nicer?

Melbourne Beach is remote and it's a residential area. if you want a beach with some tourist appeal and easy exit for day trips go to Cocoa Beach. very close to Kennedy Space Center and a few nature areas, an hour drive to Orlando theme parks. Daytona Beach would be a bigger tourist beach but may be too far away.

You say spring break, will you be here Easter Week? If so I would avoid New Smyrna as it will be packed with overflow from Daytona. Even some of the other weeks it will be more crowded there altho it's very convenient to get from there to Orlando or up to St. Augustine, down to the Space Center for some daytrips. Melbourne (beachside) has 4 large chain hotels in Indialantic & a few mom & pops or which a couple of them are located in Melbourne Beach which is actually the southern end. Very quiet there & not near many restaurants, etc. Melbourne for kids is not the best as everything is so far apart. We have a Andretti Thrill part which is mostly a go cart track on the south end and the Brevard Zoo is very far north almost closer to Cocoa Beach. 4 movie theaters, a downtown shopping area & a mall. You can get to Orlando in 1 hour from here, Sebastian Inlet 30 minutes & Cocoa Beach 30 minutes. Cocoa Beach is only 1 hour from Orlando & about 2 1/2 hours to St. Augustine.
