Clearwater Beach vs. St. Pete Beach

My husband and I (both early 40's) are planning a trip to the St.Pete/Clearwater area in mid-late Sept 2008. We love the beach for swimming, sunbathing and walking. We also enjoy going in little shops, and dining out at reasonably-priced restaurants. We may do a day trip to Busch Gardens, and do some sight-seeing. We'll probably try to go to Ft. DeSoto and Caledesi beaches while we're there. We would like to stay in a condo right on the beach. Which beach would you suggest we stay on and why? Is mid to late Sept a good time of year to visit? I want warm weather and warm water temps.

Thanks!

Either sounds like it will be fine. St. Pete Beach will put you closer to Ft Desoto, but Clearwater will put you closer to Caladesi Island. Clearwater will be a bit shorter ride to Busch Gardens, but not too much.

Clearwater Beach is a smaller area than St. Pete, so most restaurants, shops etc are within walking distance of just about any hotel/condo. St. Pete Beach is a lot longer area, so you might be able to walk to a restaurant or two, you might not, would just depend on where you stayed. And for a variety of shops, restaurants etc you would probably need to drive more in St. Pete. Also, this means that St. Pete Beach is not normally as crowded as Clearwater since in Clearwater, the main beach is much smaller than the rest of the coast all along St. Pete.

Either way, it sounds like you would enjoy an afternoon at Johns Pass Village for shopping and lunch or drinks.

Late Sept, you will have warm weather and water then for sure.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like either will be nice. Is one beach better than the other, or are they both basically the same? Is that the rainy season? Do hurricanes ever come to that area?

Both beaches are very nice. Some say the sand at Clearwater Beach is the softest of any beach anywhere. There may still be Summer afternoon rains. These normally only last an hour or two in the afternoon, then it is sunny again. It is hurricane season, and about the peak of the season. But, this just means to keep an eye on it before you leave to be sure one is not threatening, the odds of there being one in this area, at the time of your visit are very long. It's Possible, and something to keep an eye out for, but not something to worry about.

Hi there... I am also trying to decide which beach to visit but in July. Can you tell me about the beaches a bit more... ? Do they both have the same looking water? Is one more blue than the other?

Is the water clear enough to see your toes?

The water is normally the same at both. Some days it is clearer than others. Depends on the winds and any nearby storms kicking up the waves. It's never as blue, and crystal clear like you would see on a Cayman Island postcard though.
