Things to do

We will be in Telluride for the first time the week after Thanksgiving. Can anyone tell us things we should definitely do that week to include any day trips to take.

Thanks

There are two national parks within day trip range--Mesa Verde NP and Black Canyon. Some of the sites at Mesa Verde will be closed but still worthwhile and you might also check out the Anasazi Heritage Center near Dolores. Beautiful drive over Lizard Head Pass, too. If you are flying in to Montrose you might visit the Black Canyon south rim upon arrival or before departure, or combine it with a day trip to visit Ridgway and Ouray. Ouray has a lovely hot springs pool and there's also a clothing optional hot springs near Ridgway. If you go to Ridgway, one of my favorite stops is the Dennis Weaver memorial park with a magnificent eagle statue--silhouetted against the San Juan Mountains, it is a sight to see. There is also a paved walking path between Ridgway and Ridgway State Park. (There's a pair of eagles wintering at the park and watch the trees all along the river between Montrose and Ridgway). Good chance of spotting wildlife all along the route, from eagles, wild turkeys and hawks to deer, elk and possibly bighorn sheep. The Ridgway State Park visitor center has some displays about area wildlife. The Museum of the Mountain West in Montrose is very interesting and there's a rail museum in Ridgway with a Galloping Goose. (Plus you can't miss the jail wagon used in the original True Grit movie...if you are a fan, be sure to watch the movie again and then see if you can spot some of the scenery). There are good small museums in both Ouray and Telluride. And of course lots to do in Telluride.

I will offer a couple ideas but am really more familiar with summer in Tride, Not as big a fan of winters in the box canyon.

Tride is a great town for music- when we get closer check the Sheridan Opera House and Fly me to the Moon for shows and go even if you have not heard of the band, the bookers have excellent taste in music.

If there is lots of snow, then you can nordic ski on the valley floor trails. If not so much snow, then you can go up Lizard Head Pass and ski at Trout Lake. Also, if snow is light you can walk up Bear Creek Falls trail.

Taking the gondola up to Mtn Village for dinner at dusk is nice with a great night view of town on the ride down. There are several restaurants by the gondola plaza.

The little history museum in town is worth a visit to learn a bit about Telluride's rich history.

Hiking may not be a good option, depending on the amount of snow that has been received. Hiking trails may be snow covered. The Telluride Museum is a great little museum that details he local history from the time before white men to the mining heydays, to the decline of mining to the hippie years and the start of the ski resort until now. Well worth the time, the museum is located in what is the old Miner's Hospital.

As mentioned, the views from the Gondola are wonderful.

Lots of interesting shopping. (some quite expensive)
