shuttle-rental car from Montrose to telluride?

My husband and I will be arriving in Montrose and going to Telluride on Saturday. Should we take shuttle or rent a car? He will not be skiing but didnt really think he would be driving around much while there. Or maybe there would be places close by to sightsee? thanks

Where are you staying? Will you have to pay for parking the car?

He may want to drive over to Ouray (1 hour drive) and take a look at that. Beautiful scenery and very different than Telluride. Often referred to as the Switzerland of the US. Telluride has a great small museum ~ local history from the time of native americans forward. (don't need to drive there, could walk) The small town of Ridgway (between Montrose and Telluride) is where portions of the original John Wayne version of True Grit was filmed, can still recognize many of the buildings and locations used, especially if you watch the movie before going. There is also a casual restaurant called True Grit, good food and tons of John Wayne memorabilia.

There are also other things farther away ( ie ~ Mesa Verde NP) if he wants to venture further.

He could also drive out to Lizard Head Pass for some more beautiful views. If you have a car, you could drive out to the Black Canyon National Park to see the canyon either before you head to Telluride or before you go to the airport on your way back if you have time. The main road in the Black Canyon is closed past the visitor center during the winter (for snowshoers or cross country skiers or even hikers when there's not a lot of snow), but you can still get views of the canyon.

The two of you might want to drive to Ouray after skiing to visit the hot springs pool. Or there's the clothing optional Orvis hot springs at Ridgway.

Those are some of the options if you have a car, but you can easily get along in Telluride without one!
