Fly Into Oakland or San Jose to Stay in Pleasanton, CA?

Hi,

Planning on visiting a miniatures show in San Jose this October but don't wan to stay in San Jose, but in Pleasanton, CA (Pleasanton looks like a nice homey town vs. an industrial/tech looking city like San Jose). Staying for 3 nights and want to explore different towns/cities close by. Which airport would be best to fly into - Oakland or San Jose (to stay in Pleasanton)? Will rent a car at the airport so want to avoid as much traffic and congestion as possible. Thanks for any info!

Pleasanton to San Jose is not an easy commute on a weekday. 2+ hours sometimes because I have a co-worker who moved there.

You are incorrect about the industrialness of the greater San Jose area. You can be a lot closer to San Jose and still be in a small town neighborhood. Look at Los Gatos, Campbell, Mountain View.

Why would you want to stay in Pleasanton to visit SJ ? The traffic you claim to want to avoid will affect you during rush hours. Depending on your budget you could look at Los Gatos or Saratoga which has just a few hotels to stay in

But it is your trip

To stay in Pleasanton you can fly into OAK

... oh forgot about Saratoga. Also another good small town.

Flying to either airport is fine for staying in Pleasanton or the South Bay. I would pick whichever one is cheaper or have better connections.

Fly into San Jose since your miniature show is.

Work traffic is horrendous in the morning coming in from Pleasanton.

Oakland is out of the way.

Santana Row area in San Jose would be a nice area to stay but pricy.

http://www.santanarow.com/

It has more charm than Pleasanton.

Willow Glen area might also be a place to consider in San Jose area.

It has a downtown area similar to Pleasanton without the two hour commutes in and out to Plesanton to San Jose

http://www.willowglen.org/

However since your conference is downtown, I have no idea what you are talking about industrial.

There is art museum, Tech Museum, city park, hotels, etc.

It seems to me you have set your eyes on a certain "price" for your lodging....

since San Jose area can have higher rates than Pleasanton.

Perhaps wrong

But you don't want to stay in Pleasanton due to the commute.

And if you are thinking the commute is Indiana type hours

Wrong - its heavy traffic from 4:30 am - 10:30 into San Jose

and its heavy traffic outbound 2:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Ask again what you are looking for

Flying into Oakland makes no sense since you just have to combat the traffic from/to the airport.

San Jose Airport is close to your show

Get out a map.

You are correct that Pleasanton is a nice homey town. In fact, it's a very "pleasant" city. But I would not want to travel to San Jose from Pleasanton on vacation. The commute traffic is horrendous.

By the way there is NO easy public transportation option from Pleasanton to San Jose.

Pleasanton does have a BART station.

But San Jose does not.

Just in case you were wondering if that might be faster than driving

Its not as there is zero direct connections.

its why the roads are also so clogged with cars driving into work, etc

Weekends are also bad - but less so than work days.

Nope. My coworker tried ACE train to Santa Clara and bike/Lyft/ride from coworkers. Ends up about the same time frame as driving and being stuck in traffic. 2+ hrs. He does a combo of these depending on his mood and if he wants to do work on the train or need the car after work etc.

You can take the ACE train all the way from Pleasanton into SJ Diridon station near downtown. It takes about an hour, but there are only 4 trains during rush hour (to SJ morning / from SJ evening) daily M-F.

Yeah... our office is not near an ACE station but the OP's event may be.... I still do not think it is a great idea to stay so far away due to a misconception of the "industrial/tech looking city" appearance of the San Jose area.
