Late December visit to Newport Beach

We are planning to spend a week in late December in Newport Beach (coming from Minnesota). Is there anything weather related we should know as we are looking at options on where to stay (e.g. close to or on the beach vs. a few blocks from the beach).

I am not sure how the weather will determine whether to stay on the beach or a few blocks away???? The weather will be the same if you are close to the beach. Just know it may be nice and warm or cool and raining.

Not really. The weather will be the same. The beach isn't any colder or foggier than it would be a few blocks inland.

On top of Newport Coast it might be a little warmer and less foggy.

December is usually foggy along the coast at least a few miles inland. The difference between being on or adjacent to the beach and a few blocks away is mostly price. The ocean water will not be comfortable for swimming without a wet suit but you can walk or bike along the beach with just a light jacket.

Are you looking for a hotel, resort or a rental home? How many in your party and what are there ages?

If you give us some more information we can better assist you.

Thanks for your reply; there will be 3 adults in our group, maybe a 4th.

We are looking for a rental home or condo with at least 2 bedrooms and 2 baths that has parking for at least 1 car, preferable 2 and close to the beach. I am currently looking at Airbnb and VRBO, is there another option I should check out?

I would use Burr White or Abrams Coastal Properties. Read the link below.

Newport Beach limits short-term rentals such as AirBNB to certain districts, so your choice is more likely to be limited by what's available than by the weather.

By Minnesota standards, it's not cold at all. By SoCal standards, it's chilly in December. Expect highs in the 60s and lows in the high 40s. People will be wearing coats; feel free to laugh at them as you saunter by in shorts. :)

It does get very windy at the beach at sunset, so you will want long trousers by day's end.

TA (Homeaway) lists rentals on this site. However, some of those, like many on Airbnb and VRBO are illegal. You are safest booking through the agents mentioned by Scott above. If you choose to use one of the rental sites for a direct rental, be sure to check with the City of Newport Beach (you can search addressees for permitted properties on the city's website) or ask for written verification from the owner that the property is permitted for use as a Short Term Rental. newportbeachca.gov/government/departments/fi…

We have rented on the peninsula twice through VRBO and once through Airbnb. Per the city's website all 3 allow short team lodging and have active permits. One was on the boardwalk and the other two were within a block of the boardwalk.
