Big Bear with Kids

Good Morning

My daughter has been wanting to go to the snow every since I could remember. I have no clue what part of Big Bear would be good for us. I also don't have a clue what months have snow. I would want to go next year. I have a 2 year old and a 6 year old. We wouldn't want to have to drive far to get into the city. I'm thinking of renting a house. I've also put off going because I'm nervous about driving up the mountain. I heard there's another way that's not too bad. Does anyone know that route? Thanks

Hi! Snow is hard to predict from year to year. Sometimes it's pretty snowy as early as Thanksgiving. Other years, there's hadly any come Christmas. Your best bet is January or February. I lke the area known as Lagonitas best for its proximity to the lake as well as the village. If you search for that area in any of the rental websites, you should get several options. I can't comment on any specific properties, as we have only stayed in our own place.

As far as the route you are referring to, the least snow will be found coming up the back way through Victorville. Where are you coming from? This may help:

It looks like that link did not work. In any case, you would take I-10 or I-15 East from the LA area, the I15 North to Victorville. From there, you will take 18 up the mountain. This is dryer because it is on the eastern slope of the mountain, however, you still need to be careful during cold weather, and I suggest driving during the daylight. Sometimes, run-off from snow melt higher up can cause black ice on lower roads.

I think theyurfs URL was too long for TA. Here is an attempt to turn it into a "tiny url"

http://tinyurl.com/7eay22c

I think that works. It shows a map.
