Pathakot- Dharamsala and travel to Leh

I will be travelling next week from Delhi to Pathakot by train. Is the Kangra toy train to Mcleod Ganj still working?

Next, I want to travel from Dharamsala to Srinagar- can some advise the best way?

I am assuming the only way to travel from Srinagar to Ley is by bus. Is this safe for tourist (female travelling solo)? Reliable?

This is my first trip to India and all spontaneously planned! Worried about travelling alone.

Thank you for any help

Hi Lucah,

I guess you are a bit confused. Toy train runs between Pathankot & Kangra. If your destination is Mcleodganj, you can take toy train from Pathankot, get down at Kangra & further take a taxi for Mcleodganj. It will take 45 mins from Kangra station. Distance is 28 kms. Toy train is running. You can check the schedule at http://www.erail.in/

You can travel to Srinagar from dharamsala by bus. There are no direct bus though. You can take a bus to Jammu first & then another one to Srinagar from Jammu. Similarly Srinagar Leh will have to be done by bus. Just a word of caution since you are travelling alone, that too for first time in India....

The great opportunity here when heading to Ladakh is Dhasa-Manali-Leh . Generally open in September , but be aware of that the road can be taken out by snowfall for a day or two : bring an extra layer of clothes and some munchies. Fantastic road experience , when done in the right way.

Bus Dhasa-Manali , and state HRTC buses ( http://korta.nu/hrtc ) to Keylong , next day Leh , or shared jeeps . Or take an extra day in Lahaul : besides Keylong Sissu and Jispa are very nice. Don´t sleep at The Vomit Hilton . Some pointers here : http://korta.nu/sleepless

Gender culture in Ladakh and other Tibetan related areas is in sharp contrast to western preconceptions about Asia : women play a very strong role , travel independently and a lot more. I enjoy riding the local buses a lot ( …blogspot.se/2009/07/down-kunzum-la.html ) , and recommend it to single women as well.
