Barmouth in Christmas

Hello all

We are planning a week trip to Barmouth as base. Could any one suggest things to do in an hour drive radius ? We are family of 5 , the kids being 12,10,5 - .quite active kids.

We do like walking but also would also like to have scenic drives with interesting places for kids to have a nose around.

Any suggestions Would be appreciated.

What are your actual dates? This will help people in recommending things that are open.

Harlech Castle - but closed 3 days (25-27? - check)

Coed y Brenin (forest) visitor centre - but closed 25 and 26

Centre for Alternative Technology - closed throughout you stay.

Corris Craft Centre - website says many units will be closed, need to check individual units opening hours through website.

Lots of lovely walks:

- lots of beaches; Pretty Aberdyfi is popular with locals: possibly more chance of finding cafes open there on, say 26th than other places ....? (But don't hold me to it ....!)

- Mawddach trail between Dolgellau and Barmouth.

- Drive to Talyllyn Lake . Park in lay-bys or TynyCornel Hotel if open for tea/coffee. From there walk round to 'back road' on other side of lake for lovely car-free walk. Tarmaced road, but don't try to drive it: lots of gates and deep ford at other end! Take care walking round from hotel to back road - slate path is getting slippy with algae and you don't want to end up in the lake! I prefer to walk on the road.

- if weather's OK, research the Precipice Walk for a super 4-mile high level walk - you drive up by car, then the walk is relatively flat. Will be muddy in places at this time of year.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. Since we are there for 7 days, are visits deep into north Wales a good idea? Are there remote scenic places you could suggest?
