Beware of US 41 Fleet rental in Williams

We rented a minivan on a recent Memorial weekend trip to Williams. Service was excellent and people were friendly. When we arrived at the campground, the van was waiting for us. The van was another story. it had 184,000 miles on it, the check engine light was on, the low tire light was on and one of the doors wouldn't close on its own. We called the emergency number several times, but no one ever answered or called back to answer the messages we left. Fortunately, the car held together and got us to the Grand Canyon and Sedona, but not without constant anxiety.

It's called I40 Fleet Rental. For others reading this, and wanting to rent a vehicle in the areas of GCNP, Williams and Flagstaff, rent in Flagstaff where the major car rental forms are located at the airport and a few offices in the town. If arriving by train, get off in Flagstaff. Never rent from private rental companies unless someone local can recommend them to you. The majors provide service and do answer the phone.

Sounds like the vehicles that Rent-a-Wreck and Ugly Duckling used to rent out there in Arizona and California. The funny thing is that we used both of them quite a few times and never had a bit of trouble. The best thing was the price and the fact that they didn't care about a few extra dings here and there. They didn't get excited unless you came back dragging a fender or a bumper.

What ever happened to them, anyway?
