The drive to the Grand Canyon can be done in a day, however it’s a 4hr trip up there and another 4hrs to get back, which leave little time to visit and enjoy the Canyon. Winter weather in the northern Arizona area can be as bad or worse then in eastern Nebr. Snow, Ice, and Cold weather causing storms, blizzards and road conditions to be unpredictable.
An alternative driving trip that can be made much easier and just as enjoyable is spending time in Sedona red rock area. It’s only 2 hours +/- from Phx and you’ll enjoy more time seeing and doing there. The weather for that area is less harsh in the wintertime. There’s a great many things to do, see and enjoy in Sedona. Take a jeep ride back into the red rocks, hiking, horseback riding, biking, shopping and photography is great. A must is taking the camera.
Most visitors try to do an overnighter at least and visit the Grand Canyon. It's fantastic to wake up there if staying in the park. Then come on back to sedona and spend the rest of that day there (do pink jeep tour for sure for the boys) and head to Phoenix in the evening. It's two jammed packed days, but breaks up the driving and I certainly would not want to recommend you miss the Grand Canyon once in your life. You will just have to check weather conditions closer to the date to be sure there is no snow at Grand Canyon expected. Otherwise, snow doesn't usually bog down Sedona much.
I really appeciate the help!! Thanks...we are really looking forward to our trip!!
