Please help me plan 24 hours with two teens

We are passing through Johannesburg on our way to victoria falls arriving at 11am and leaving the next day. I was wondering what area in town is the best to stay and closest to what we should see, ie Apartheid museum or other sites best for a family with two teens 15 & 16. Thanks for your recommendations.

Take the gautrain and stay in either Sandton or Rosebank area. Best to organize a tour to the apartheid museum since you'll basically only have half a day.

Do you know how far Santon and Rosebank are from the Apartheid Museum and the best way to get there? Is there any other must sees in Johannesburg? Thank you.

Personally, I think the apartheid museum is a little 'heavy' for two teens. Suggest Maropeng World Heritage Site in the Cradle of Humankind which may be more interesting for them. Your hotel may be able to suggest transport to get there. It's located kind of north west outside Johannesburg by Muldersdrift area. Also very close to there are the Sterkfontein Caves where your kids can get down and dirty and get right into the caves where (I think) first man roamed around.

You are in Joburg for a short time and if you decide to do one of those activities, either will take up the best part of the day so you won't have a lot of time to do anything else. Lots of hotels in and around Sandton and Rosebank. Both are upmarket areas fairly close to one another and both have Gautrain stations if you decide to take the Gautrain from the airport. In Sandton you've got Nelson Mandela square adjoining Sandton city shopping centre with lots of restaurants around the square so fairly easy to get around there. My personal opinion would be Sandton bearing in mind you only have one day and one evening.

You are short on time. Anywhere near Sandton Gautrain station (direct and safe commuter train connection from and to the airport) is safe, easy accessible and has a huge mall as well as good restaurant choices in close vincitiy. I would say the best place to stay for a short time, especially with teenagers.

Also consider a tour that would pick you up at the airport, drop your bags at the airport, allow you to shower (if necessary) and then proceed to the Apartheid Museum and perhaps Soweto for a brief tour. That way you are sorted both with airport transfer and tour.

As for areas, if you have access to your own transport, also consider Melrose Arch. It has easy access to highway to the Museum and number of restaurants and shops to keep you occupied in meantime.

Hello, Sandton is a great suggestion, but with your teens, i recommend you take a transfer out to Montecasino. Stay at the City Lodge there, and you can let them loose to have fun in the complex. Thats what a lot of locals do, as it is quite safe and lots to do, eat, take in a movie, theatre show (comedy theatre as well). Then you can also relax, take in a nice meal and if you interested, spend a few dollars at the casino too. Then next day a transfer back to the airport. very simple and your teens will enjoy the area.

I concur with Lyn in above posting - Montecasino is an ideal location as there is also the awesome bird park right there as well as the hot air balloon ride.

If you can afford it, try and get to stay at The Palazzo, Montecasino as they have an amazing pool that I am sure your teenagers will enjoy. We just loved staying at this hotel last month and cannot recommend it highly enough.
