Do you intend to travel away from Joburg to areas such as Kruger National Park - about 5-6 hours drive? If you are just looking at the cities and the regions around a better split, on tourism value, would be 2 days Joburg 7 days Cape Town. What time of year do you plan - which also makes a difference?
There is no need for a tour operator. South Africa is one of the easiest countries to book everything directly yourself. This way you get the best value and the most flexibility. There are literally thousands of great places to stay. The best are often the smaller family run guest houses and small hotels - which the tour operators often don't use. Great for families. You will get loads of help and advice in these forums.
With 2 adults and 2 children the best way to get about is to hire a car and drive yourself. The roads are good and driving is very easy here. All signs and information are in English. For four of you this will also be VERY much cheaper than taking tours and taxis everywhere. Not sure of the ages of your children but waiting for tours and taxis all the time is often not fun! The flexibility of having your own car and making your own way is so much easier for all of you. Thousands do it this way every year and end up with fantastic holidays.
So a bit more detail and you will get a lot of help.
I am also looking for advice, 2adults, 2 sons (21,27). Looking to travel in August, a safari a big must. Which town is best to sitghtsee and travel in/ out of Cape Town Of Joburg?
Hello Linda, firstly August is a great time for safaris in Kruger National Park. I suggest: Arrive Joburg, maybe spend one night there, and it you have recovered from the flight, you can do a day tour (Soweto/Apartheid museum/Cradle of Humankind/Lesedi Cultural Village), then fly from Joburg to either Hoedspruit or Nelspruit (Skukuza airport will also be open by then) road transfer to a private lodge (there are many to choose from) spend 3 nights, then fly Nelspruit to Cape Town, spend 5 nights there, doing the local touring - you can hire a car, or use a local operator to take in the sights. There are self catering options all around the city and places like camps bay. so this is a suggestion of what you can do..
