Soweto tour and Apartheid Museum timing

We arrive in Johannesburg from our Safari on a Thursday night and have all Friday to see the city before an international flight home at 9:50pm Friday night. We figure we should get to airport by 7pm at latest. We haven’t book our hotel room for that Thursday but we looked at places in Melrose Arch area maybe...Any recommendations on the best way to fit in a Soweto tour along with a visit to the Apartheid Museum? And if possible maybe also Constitution Hill? What order makes most sense for these activities? Is it too much to squeeze in? Thanks!

Do you plan to go on your own? I took a private tour for half a day (it actually ended around 3pm) that included the Apartheid museum, Soweto, and Hector Peterson memorial. The full day option would have included Constitution hill as well. In terms of start / finish times you could arrange that with your guide so you can be at the airport in time.

Take the Gautrain from the airport to Rosebank.

Take the Hop on hop off bus with Soweto option.

Stay in a hotel, or BnB in Rosebank.

Take the Gautrain back to the airport.

QODs plan is good but with luggage it might be easier to cab/Uber to/from the airport. We have also just stayed in an airport hotel for convenience. The HopOn HopOff bus with Soweto is a great way to see the city highlights. Have your hotel hold your bags for the day. Most will at no or little cost. The airport doesn’t open for international check in for many airlines until pretty late in the day.

We finished our safari and had the company drop us at a JNB hotel. We had Solly pick us up from the hotel and drop us a JNB in time for flight back to the states. The hotel was Aerotropolis Guest house that offers a free shuttle from JNB to the hotel and back. It was about $50 a night with breakfast and the shuttle. Has a limited dinner menu. Kitchen a bit slow. Has a honor system refrigerator. Nice gated grounds. There are several other hotels in the area. The tour guide who is self employed and has excellent reviews on TA: https://phillipians4four.co.za/

I used “Soweto & Other Townships Tours with Photojournalist Ilan Ossendryver”. Did a great job. I reviewed them on TripAdvisor and they’re also on Facebook.
