I do not think that this destination requires any particular type of a car, as the Rd is pretty good, though can be long, slow (trucks, fog, etc.), and when going through the mountains, we once had huge rocks falling on the Hwy/blocking one lane, and the visibility was quite poor at times. Definitely not a trip to attempt after dark, any part of it. In addition, Cahuita is a place we stayed at twice, and were fine without a car, as the park is right there, you can rent bikes, and there is a cheap local bus, if needed, for visiting Puerto Viejo / The Jaguar Animals Rescue centre, Manzanillo, etc., if you wish.
