My husband just won a trip to CR staying at the Sombras (?) Condos. Can anyone tell me about ANYTHING in CR? We've never been. Hoping to go in either April or June (best time for schedules). We are obviously staying at a condo, so I am worried we will get "bored" not being at a resort with the resort amenities. Any advice?

Congratulations. How long will you be staying there? I assume you mean the Sombras Condos in Playas Del Coco?

I don't think you will be bored. There are many shops/bars/restaurants in Playas Del Coco and lots of activities not too far away.

My only advice, spend your days outside of Playa Del Coco (unless you really like the shops there) and then you can enjoy the town in the evening.

Here's some general information on Playas Del Coco:

The condo is in Playa del Cocos, about 30 minutes drive from LIR airport.. It's north of the "main drag" where most of the shops and restaurants are in Cocos.

IMO you are better off with a car to explore the area of Costa Rica your condo is in..

Check out the "things to do in Playa Del Cocos" at the top of the forum page.

We stayed in Cocos and visited :

Congo Trail Ziopline.in Sardinal

Rincon de la Vieja national park just east of Liberia

Black sand beach in Ocotal ( dinner at Father Rooster's too)

El Viejo Wetlands boat tour of Tempisque River

Visited Tamarindo … a beach town just south of Cocos

Roads for most part in the area are fine. Some are graded gravel, but not an issue.

Bored? Depends on what you want to see and do. Doubtful there will be folks hanging around the pools at the condo complex. Ours did have a pool that we used only when we returned from some "adventure" .

As it said in the link I posted above, it's very hot (highs in the mid-90s) with little rain in April and the surroundings will be brown. In June, you'll probably get rain, though that'll make things green, and highs will be closer to 90.

You will want to fly to LIR (Liberia) airport, it's much closer than SJO (San Jose), which is about 4 -5 hours away.

all the things Steverinoh mentioned are excellent suggestions. I would definitely rent a car.

Here are a couple more suggestions

Sea bird excursions

Hacienda Gauchipelin (near the entrance to Rincon de la Vieja national park)

We intentionally stayed away from "resorts" as CR offers so much to do. The last place we wanted to spend time was our hotel. Some of the things we did that we loved was raft, hike, swim, take pix of the monkeys, try random restaurants, just view the beautiful landscape from our cars, zipline...there's honestly no shortage of amazing things to do.

Hi Kelsey, Lucky you!

There are many things to do around the area. There are many reputable tour companies that offer great excursions. Book directly with the company though.

We used Costour last year and we're very happy.

The town itself has everything you could possibly need without being too big.

Search "excursions from Playas del Coco" and you will get lots of information.

Definitely rent a car--very easy to drive in that part of the country and ground transportation can be very expensive.

Las Sombras condos are nice! They're only 1 block from the beach and about 4 blocks from the main strip in town. Coco is nice home base for doing tours, we have markets, restaurants, souvenir shops, banks, taxis, tour vendors and are only 25 minutes away from the LIR airport.

Thank you for the recommendation, Josh K!

Other tours I recommend out of Coco are to Llanos de Cortes, Palo Verde River Tour, hiking in Rincon de la Vieja. If you rent a car and take yourself, I suggest Adobe because I've rented from them several times without any problems. If you prefer to be taken around with a private guide, I recommend my friend Jerry Barrera who was born and raised in Coco. Here is his facebook page https:/… and you can contact him through that or his website.https://cocoreggaefoundation.com/category/tours/
