la fortuna - ok to drive into town at night for dinner?

what happens at evening meal time, 6, 7, 8 PM- is it safe to drive from say the the el silencio hotel or say lomas del volcan hotel into the area (town?) where the restaurants are or isit unsafe?

are you then "trapped" at your hotel"

If in doubt (such as having an extra beer or 2) take a taxi, as they are plentiful, your hotel can arrange one, perhaps one they recommend. As to driving, if the weather is fine, then you can make the trip. Roads are not the same as the US and that piece of road suffers from lack of extra lighting and pavement markings, but if the drive is taken at a reasonable speed, you should be fine.

It is plenty safe. The road is in good condition and the people are friendly. Don Rufino's is the best dinner restaurant in town.

The road is in very good shape and it is pretty safe. Just don't leave your camera or passport on the dashboard. People sometimes relax to much, just be smart. A designated driver is always a good option. Enjoy Fortuna a nice town.

I'd say it's totally safe. There's basically one main road that goes through town with the hotels and restaurants scattered along it. The road is in good shape, better than some of our roads back home.

If you are going to have some wine or a drink take a cab. The limit for impaired driving in CR is .05% alcohol and it is the right thing to do anyway.

Looks like we will be spending a week or so in this area also....glad to hear of the ease of driving,we live in a very rural area and are well used to various road conditions....might feel just at home!!

The road is plenty safe. Just beware of roaming cows on the main road, especially when it is foggy.

And of course local citizens going about their business. The shoulders are narrow or non existent, and caution needs to be used when heading to town.
