Hi, I am visiting Mumbai for 3 days, I wanted to buy a heavy salwar kameez for my engagement. I am new to Mumbai so wanted some help with the stores I should visit.
Try Gandhi market, there are readymades as well as heavily embroidered fabric for salwar suits that you can buy. Also lehenga cholis.
Otherwise, you can try Bawree in Santacruz, it has got a reasonably priced collection. Also try the string of shops at BB Dadar (Paaneri, Laazaree etc). These also have lots of options.
But the best option is Gandhi Market.

Seasons is next door to Bawree, but Bawree price is about 40-50% of Seasons. Seasons is quite expensive. Heavy suits will come for 20-30k or so. But you should definitely look at it. I posted a lot of information earlier in this forum about shopping for weddings in Mumbai. I will post the link to those older postings.
Please see for more lists of shops.
Next to Seasons (in between Bawree and Seasons) there is a shop which sells very good wedding jewellery, it is not gold/silver, but costume jewellery.
Other shops for jewellery are:
please let me know all the nice places to buy shalwas kameez. You say you have a link which had all the places you had written about earlier is it possible to send me the link
Shrishti,
When r u coming to Mumbai and in which area are you staying? These days sales are going on all over! Try at Irla (Vile Parle (W)) there are various shops like Aishwarya Design Studio, Kanchana etc. You may get a good deal. Else, you could go to Inorbit Mall, Malad (W) where there are various shops in one place like Biba, Jashn, Shoppers Stop, Lifestyle etc.
thanks for your repy ..do you know of any good designers who make to order shalwar kameez .I will be staying in colaba.
You need to go to middle class localities, especially those which have a big Gujarati population if you want wide variety and low prices. If you are in Colaba, then for relatively cheap fancy clothes, you should go to Kalbadevi area. I suggest you start with Mangaldas Market which is opp Jama Masjid near Crawford Market.
Some other good places I know are Dadar (near Plaza Cinema) and Gandhi Market. In Gandhi Market there are about 100 shops, each selling chamak-dhamak clothing. It caters to the Punjabi and Gujarati market. In Dadar there are about 10-12 big showrooms of wedding clothes, it caters to the Maharashtrian and Gujarati market.
