Biking around Moorea

My husband and I are going to Moorea in mid-May for 6 days for the first part of our honeymoon. We have been doing alot of research about the island and places we want to go but have found very little on biking options. How realistic is it to use a mountain bike as our primary means of transportation, not only around the island but also to get up to Mt. Belevedere.

Thanks!

You can use a mountain bike to get to Belevedere but there are many switchbacks and the road is narrow. Some reasons not to use a bike on Moorea are narrow roads in places, concrete

mountain side ditches along the road, dogs, fast drivers trying to make the ferry departure, and large trucks. The same advice appies to scooters.

Where will you be staying on Moorea? Some resorts, like Club Bali Hai and the Pearl, are within easy biking distance of just about anything you would need. Others, like the Sofitel and Sheraton, are a little further away from shops and restaurants.

My husband bikes around Moorea frequently, including biking from Haapiti up to the top of Belvedere. (He is in good shape!) Hamara is right -- you must be very cautious! There is one circle-island road around the island, 37 miles, two lanes wide, and big ditches on the mountain side in most places. Loose dogs will frequently chase bikes. But you will see many beautiful sights closer-up than in a car.

You may want to bring a good bike chain and lock with you, as they are usually not provided by the bike rental places.

We are staying at the Pearl. Thank you for your input...will definately keep it in mind. I don't mind renting a car, but it just seems such a waste.

The Pearl is in a nice location, and is actually within walking distance to many shops and restaurants in Maharepa. You might want to rent a car for one day (or half a day) to see the entire island and also stock up on beverages and snacks, and then rent a bike on other days to get around. It's really very challenging to see the entire island by bike.

you will be able to rent both bikes and a car from the Pearl resort. As stated by Barbi, it is doable to ride around the island and as stated by hamara the raoads are not of the best quality with great concrete ditches on the side.

just play safe.

Enjoy Moorea!

PS Please make sure to go to the pastry shop in the shopping centre of Maharepa for their sinful coconut chocolate filled croissants..
