17-day itineary in Yamaguchi in Nov for 60’s couple

Having had a wonderful 3 weeks driving trip covering Chugoku and Shikoku in spring, we are returning in autumn Nov, for a focused tour of Yamaguchi. We like it relaxing with ryokan stays, and keeping to an economical budget on hotel and food, but eating local food is a must. Our itineary:

2N Iwakuni (pickup car)

4N Shimonoseki (to eat lots at Karato Market)

2N Nagato in Onsen ryokan

2N Tsuwano in Onsen ryokan

2N in Yuda Onsen

2N in farm outside Hofu

1N Iwakuni (to return car and take bus/train to Hiroshima airport)

We fly into Hiroshima about 9 am and hope to take bus or train to Iwakuni, where after 2 nites, we will get rental car for the rest of the trip. We reckon touring by train/bus will be troublesome due to our lack of Japanese’s linguistic skills, and car will give us flexibility to scout for nice eateries in the countryside. We hope to manage toll fees by taking the longer country roads that will be more scenic and interesting. Hopefully, free carparking is available at the various sights. We are not keen on temples and shrines.

Questions:

1. Is our itineary ok?

2. What is the cheapest way to get from Hiroshima airport to Iwakuni? Any risk in leaving Iwakuni on same day as our flight ex Hiroshima at 3pm?

3. At Shimonoseki where we have 4 nites, any itineary to fill the time?

4. Our 6 nites of ryokan stay all includes breakfast and dinner. Would we get better deal on meals if we eat in the restaurants in town?

Really appreciate any advice, especially from destination experts. Thank you in advance!

You can combine Mojiko in Kitakyushu with Shimonoseki. Ferry ride is less than 10 minutes and it departs every 20 minutes. You can leave your car in the parking in Shimonoseki. You can also cross Kanmon straits by driving the tunnel road.

I wouldn't stick to Karato Market for sea food. There're a lot of food options in Shimonoseki, including Kamon Wharf. I'd spend a day for Kaikyo Yume Tower, Kaikyokan Aquarium, Akama Jingu Shrine, Karato Market, Mimosusogawa Park and Hinoyama Park. If I walk the straits tunnel to Mojiko and ride ferry to Ganryujima Island, I would need at least a half day.

If you have sufficient time to drive and explore in western Yamaguchi Prefecture, I'd recommend you to visit Tsunoshima Island.

Even if you are not into temple and shrine do consider going to Ruriko-ji if you are there during the second half of Nov. Autumn colour with the pond and pagoda is just beautiful.

It sounds like you have a fantastic trip planned.

You might also consider Senzaki and Omijima in Nagato. This article from last year may be useful (though some of the train information is now out of date)

As our holiday approaches next month,we are concerned with the after math of the July unfortunate floods. Should we make adjustments to our driving itinerary?

So far, road damage in Yamaguchi Prefecture is limited.

As its prefecture office show the bypass road above, the area is localized in its eastern part. I don't think you have to struggle in driving at the moment.
