We are planning a trainwatching trip the first weekend in october. We'll be staying at The Tunnel Inn (The Station Inn was already booked up). Any recommendations for places to eat?

Depends on how expensive you want.. of course, there are the normal chains/ But for local restaurants, The Allegro (Italian) and Phoenix are both good, El Compesino (looks like a dive, but good Mexican)....all are in the Altoona area... I am assuming you are driving as your hotel is in Galitzin, a little outside of Altoona

Lots of italian restaurants here in Altoona. Go to http://www.finellis.com/ Mrs. Finelli's chocolate cake with peanut butter icing is the best I have ever had!! She makes a great cappuccino too. Hope you enjoy your stay :-)

We just returned from our trainwatching weekend. Stayed at The Tunnel Inn in Gallitzen www.thetunnelinn.com It's right next to the tracks and tunnel-a great place to watch trains go by. Mike made us feel very welcome, the rooms were attractive and comfortable, and the other guests were a lot of fun to talk to. We also spent some time on the porch of The Station Inn - amother great trainwatching spot.

One morning we met Phillip Faudi on the deck of the Tunnel Inn. He was picking up a group who were going out with him for a half-day tour. Although we were traveling with our own train expert, we decided to sign up for the afternoon tour and it turned out to be terrific. He took us to about 10 different spots and we saw 20 trains-some going down 3 tracks at the same time. He's an expert on trains as a former railroader. Should you want to contact him, his phone # is (814)949-8238. We had such a great time with him that he and his wife came over to our inn that night with a bottle of wine and more train talk, What a fun trip!

Would you believe we never got out of Gallitzen to eat? We'd planned to, but....... We had a good meal at the Wine Cellar there.

One of our favorite Altoona restaurants is Jethro's. It's an odd combination of Steaks & Ribs, Italian food, and country atmosphere. Cold beer and sodas served in a Mason jar. Worth a stop as the food is very good, the service is great, and the atmosphere is good for the entire family.
