Cigarettes.....best price - duty free or local shops

Hi

Can anyone tell me whether it is better to buy cigarettes duty free or locally please? I fly into KLIA with Qatar and fly out of Penang with Air Asia. Not sure if I can buy cigarettes on arrival so can help me please. Going on to Hong Kong so another question is does anyone know if cheaper to buy there than Malaysia.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

You are only allowed 19 sticks of cigarettes into HK.

let's take Marlboro pack of 20s pricing:

Malaysia. Duty free- per carton:200 sticks:RM68

Malaysia local shops: pack of 20s:RM10.20

HK's local shop: HKD60 for pack of 20s, whilst in duty free HKIA- per carton:200sticks-HKD250/300.

HKD100 is around RM40

As such, if you wish, and permissible- get your duty free fags when you arrive into KLIA Terminal M, before you proceed to low cost carrier terminal to check in for your domestic Air Asia flight to Penang.

You may also wish to do a web check in and print out boarding pass for your Airaasia flight as there is a counter check in fees for their domestic flight.

Then when you go to HK, just make sure you only have 19 sticks on you.

Hi mKiaratravel. Please excuse me asking but what are sticks of cigarettes. Is it the same as a pack? I am not flying to Penang. I coming from the UK to KL by Qatar and travelling to Penang by local transport and then flying from Penang to HongKong.

Thanks for the prices and exchange rate. I will work out which is best.

Is there a way to contact KLIA Duty Free by mail to ask for their prices? I'am interested in the price of a bottle of Gin (Gordons or Beafeater).

Hi mKiaratravel. I have read the info on HK duty free and I see sticks mean actual cigarettes...... Sorry I have just never read anything like this before...only 19 cigarettes! Guess I will have to buy in HK or Doha on the way back to the UK! Thanks for the info.

On my recent trip to HK i took a full packet of 50's in and never was asked about them, was prepared to give them 30 if they wanted... lol

When i left HK back to Australia i bought 2 cartons (200 each carton) for $50AUD so $25 each...

G'day, OP post #6 and #7., gosh, you guys and gals are real risk takers.

If recent trip back to Australia, duty free concession on cigarettes have also been revised to 50 cigarettes since Sept 2012. (from previous 250 cigarettes) per person.

@ Post no. 4: Bombay costs RM68 so assume Gordon's slightly cheaper. Forget about emailing airport duty-free.
