KLIA2 to KLIA for a transfer...enough time?

Hello, we arrive on a Air Asia flight at 17:50 at KLIA2.

We have two choices for our onward journey to Singapore:

(1) 20:40 Singapore Airlines flight departing from KLIA;

OR

(2) 21:45 Silk Air flight departing from KLIA.

We are flying Air Asia business class so theoretically we should get our bags off pretty quickly. Would you risk the 20:40 flight or play it safe for the 21:45 flight (both are the same price). I assume the free inter-terminal transfer is relatively quick and leaves regularly.

Thanks.

Hello,

You fail to mentioned whether you are coming off a domestic flight on airasia.

If it is an international flight, you'll need an hour to get through baggage retrieval and customs. Sometimes more. I think the connecting 20:40 is not enough time. You'll then need to get out of the restricted area, buy a train ticket to a different terminal, check in and line up for customs and baggage checks.

Yes it is an international flight. Thanks for the advice. Looks like later flight then.

Why not just take another Air Asia flight to Singapore and save the hassle? Air asia have many flights a day between the two countries

The fare is a SQ fare from KL with final destination London and is cheaper doing it this way as opposed to buying 2 separate fix.

As you are connecting to a London flight there is no way you should take a risk.

If the Air Asia flight is late you may lose your flight to London with all the consequential cost.

General advice for a connection of that nature would be to arrive in KL the day before or at the very latest 5-6 hours beforehand.

Planes are often delayed especially as the day goes on.

Time to clear KLIA2 : 1 Hour

Time to get from KLIA2 to KLIA1 : 30mins

Time to checkin before flight departs : 1.5 hours

So at the absolute minimum, without flight delay, I would allow 3 hours between KLIA2 to KLIA1 transfer. That is assuming you have no issues with immigration, damaged or missing bags, or got lost in KLIA2 finding transport to KLIA1.

Even if you take the later silk air flight, your allowance for flight delay is less than 1 hour. Not the kind of odds I would like to gamble with.

Thank you for helpful tips. There is one other option we have and it involves London via Colombo. This would mean an Air Asia international flight from KLIA2 to CMB departing 20:55.

If we go from 1 air asia flight to another, is it possible to save the 1 hour clearing KLIA2. ALso, no need to travel to different terminal. Would these odds be better? Thx.

P.S. We are also arriving to KLIA2 in Air Asia's Business/Premium flatrbed class, so at least our bags would come off quick if they don't transfer our bags for us? Thanks.

If your air asia flights are separately ticketed then you have to do immigration and recheck your baggage.

Are you flying AA from Australia?

In the main those flights arrive on schedule.

Have you looked at the Sri Lankan airlines flight to London that leaves KLIA at around 10 am.

A nice overnight break at the Tune Hotel and then on your way in the morning.

The flight to London stops in Colombo for about an hour and if I recall you get to Heathrow around 5pm

Just checked the Sri Lankan airlines flight and it has a 3 hour stopover in Colombo and arrives heathrow at 7pm.

Have a look at Skyscanner if you have not already.I find it a great site for seeing all the alternatives but make sure you book with the airline link.
