Drive from Penang to Kuala Lumpur

We might hire a driver and car in Georgetown

How long is the journey and is there much to see on the way to KL?

Would you recommend it or should our party of 3 fly? Our ages are 40-72.

Thoughts/advice?

Thanks!

Are you travelling just one way?

You'll be mainly on a highway - perhaps look into flying as its swifter overall.

It is about a 4 hour drive on a tolled highway. Unless you divert off the highway, the views are mostly monotonous, palm oil plantations and the like. Some limestone hills around Ipoh.

The best thing about the journey is the fruit stalls at the motorway service areas. The worst thing is the boredom. Just how many palm trees do you want to see?

Well if you have a lot of vacation time, and don't mind a drive, it's a calm drive most of the way. But if you are tight for time, take a quick flight from Penang to Subang airport.

There's really nothing to see along the way. You can have a good nap in the car.

Fly and you will be fresh for visiting when you hit Penang. Grab taxi is widely available and easy to book. If you like maybe join some tours. You can do without a driver in Penang if you identify what places you want to see.

A third option is the hi-speed rail from Butterworth to KL. It's fast (a little over 4 hours), it's comfortable (you can get up and walk around, plus there's a snack bar), and it's direct (you arrive at KL Sentral). It's also quite chilly on board, so bring a jacket.

As far as places along the way, Taiping is a very atmospheric and quiet small town to explore and Ipoh offers great food, street art, and nice architecture. Either place would be best done as an overnight stop. Enjoy!

I noticed your location is Jerusalem....not sure what passport you are holding...here the government does have some issues with Israel...as does some people...I would keep references to Israel to a minimum on your trip.
