Mariinsky Program December

We will be in St Petersburg from 13th December until 17th December and were hopeful to see a ballet such as The Nutcracker in the original theatre.

I see that opera performances are scheduled on 14th and 15th.

When should I expect to see the program for Dec 13 and 16?

Thanks in advance

Nutcracker - Dec 19 (Rus web-site) and 23 (both). Don't know why there's a difference.... They might add more performances (not necessarily Nutcracker) closer to the season.

Thanks Svetakoshka,

We have decided to attend Prince Igor on the 15th and will also attend either Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty at the Mikhailovsky.

We have never attended an opera or ballet before and can't think of a better location in the world to do so.

I think you would really enjoy the Mikhailovskiy. It’s smaller than Mariynskiy but so so beautiful and you can see the performances much better as a result of its size !

The famous Sydney opera must be sort of closer in distance...

@ colin-Macl: I hope you enjoy Prince Igor. You'll have to be a little patient with it: Borodin died way before he could pull it all together into a coherent music-drama. The Mariinsky production looks good & sounds good, but you may be left wondering at the end what it was all about! The narrative thread isn't easy to follow.

Either Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella at the Mikhailovsky will be absolutely tops. If you can do both, do both.

Well, yes - but it's notorious for its high prices and awful acoustics.

In all probability YouTube with its scores of opera / ballet recordings is out of reach of our antipode guests, too...

P.S.

Look, they seem to be as changeable as their weather, I see The Nutcracker now Dec 15 and 17

And no Prince Igor - may be quite a relief :)))

@MuscoviteVT - that's the 2016 playbill. Prince Igor is still scheduled at Mariinsky I for 15 December next.

@colin-MacL: Cinderella at the Mikhailovsky, 16 December - don't think twice, just go for it. You'll never spend a better evening in the theatre.
