KK general queries

thinking of a visit in September with KL for a few days, then around a week in Borneo. The orang utans are a must, possibly at rasa ria or we could fly to see them at sepilok. Also the national park at KK looks good and to see the fireflies too. We'd visit the islands and do some snorkelling but are not really beach types. I'm gathering it sounds best to hire a car to see the area, is it best to have a couple of days in KK then tour around? Ideally we were hoping to stay in KK with day trips from there but not sure if this will be the best option. We've driven abroad but as I drive a lot at work it would be nice to do without it. However, we would obviously want to see as much as poss and get the most of a short visit. We're into wildlife and it'd be good to see some smaller villages than just cities. Is it easy to get to the beach via bus from wherever we decided to stay in KK?

Have a look underTop Questions on the right of the page and the Green Section on the left. There is a lot of information. All of the good beaches are out of the city at places like Nexus, Rasa Ria and the Tip of Borneo. They are not easy to get to by bus.

You can get to the islands of TAR park from a number of locations, Jesselton Pier at the Northern end of the city, Sutera Harbour Marina and near the Shangri-la Tanjung Aru. There are boats from each of the places at frequent intervals.

A lot will depend where you want to go oif it can be done by day trips. If you decide to go the Sepilok to see Orangs it may be better to spend na night and visit turtle island as well.

I suggest that you may need to contact some local travel agencies to help out. Try one or more of these

Thanks for this. Hiking KK is a possibility so that would take 2 days out of our week in Borneo, and we'd prebook it with a tour operator if we chose to do it. Would you recommend just staying in KK, we could hire a car for a couple of days to see the beaches and sights that are difficult with public transport or would you suggest staying somewhere else to see more of the local area? If we did the KK hike we'd just see the orangs at the rasa ria than going to Sepilok. The river trip with the fireflies and the probiscus monkeys we could do as a tour. We were just unsure of whether to stay in KK the whole time or move around.

Staying in KK is definitely one option as you can do alot of day trips.

Another suggestion would be to fly up to Sandakan (late afternoon if poss) then do the overnight trip to Turtle Island, this leaves first thing in the morning and you overnight on the Island and have the option of going to Sepilok the next day and then getting dropped at the airport that afternoon to fly back to KK. Many travel agencies can arrange the trip, or you can organise your flights and arrange the Turtle Island/Sepilok seperately. Don't forget to bargain about the price as we received quite a good discount doing this.

hi there

i suggest u to stay ard KK for few days because u can make a lot of day trips frome here... rafting trips, river cruise, kayaking ard island, in gaya island (the big one) there s a few mid-long treks to enjoy the local flora-fauna and lots of snorkeling and nice beaches (avoid sapi and manukan isl. coz most crowded). I think better to invest few bucks for the island transfer coz rent a car isn t that cheap and getting ard without knowing where to go can be a bit frustrating, especially if u re already fed up of driving for ur job. the few nice beaches r not really close to town center but u can reach them easily also with bicycle and they re included in resorts, so usually (especially weekend) they re crowded. for orang utans u need to head to sandakan, so as they suggest, give a thought visit to turtle island too... enjoy!!

Thanks both. We like cycling so how long a bike trip would it be and can you recommend any nice beaches to bike to? Would we be able to bike and see some nice scenery too? We were just thinking of the rasa ria for the orang utans as I'd read that you don't always see them at sandakan?

Rasa Ria is about 35KM from the city, if that is where you are staying. If you are going to see the Orangs at Rasa Ria read the FAQ on how to book the Orang U tan under Top Questions on the right of the page. There is a lot of other information.

PS don't forget that it is hot and very humid in Sabah.

Hi, no it'd be more in KK itself we'd stay. Forgot about the heat re the cycling, us northern Brits won't be used to that!! Don't know if any of you can recommend a decent place to stay in KK. Somewhere easy for public transport and to visit some night life, mid range preferably with a pool. Cheers again, much appreciated.

Have a look at Le Meridien for accomodation. On the foreshore in the city. Close to everything. Gets good reviews.

Hi,

We have just got back from 2 1/2 weeks in Sabah and it was amazing.

We hired a car for 6 days and drove ourselves around no problem. The car was delivered to us at the Rasa Ria and off we went over to Sandakan, visiting the Sabah Tea plantations, Sepilok, Turtle island and the Kinabatagan River. The scenery was amazing and you can stop wherever you like. You need to take a bit of care on the road but no where near as bad as I thought it might be.it takes 6-7 hours to get from kk to Sandakan.

As we had our 7yr old and 8yr old with us it was an ideal way to get about and saved us thousands of pounds, and being a northerner like yourself that was an important consideration. I pre booked everything directly with the hotel or operator before we went and there were no problems with anything.

If you want more specific info please just ask.
