Hi -

If you can book your flights early, that would seriously be the best way. Otherwise, you are looking at a 4-6 hour bus journey.

Flights - checkout Air Asia and sometimes MAS has good early bird specials.

Regarding buses, please check out this recent thread:

Regarding places to see, please check out the FAQ for Penang. To give you an idea of key sights:

1) heritage zone - Khoo Kongsi, Blue Mansion, Little India, Kapitan Kling Mosque, Goddess of Mercy temple, Peranakan Museum, Mahamariamman Hindu Temple

2) Kek Lok Si Temple complex - one of the largest buddhist complex in Southeast Asia

3) The Sleeping Buddha temple (Wat Chai) and the Burmese temple across the road in Pulau Tikus

4) Batu Feringghi beach and night market

5) Clan Jetties

You mention food...Penang is known for its street food so do try to sample the local food...visit New World Food Court (lunch time), Red Garden (evenings) and pretty much anywhere else you come across and see lots of locals eating :) IN Batu Ferringghi, head to Long Beach hawker centre (evenings only).

Also please check out this link regarding the heritage sites:

Hope this gets you started.

Happy researching!

I should also add that if you take the bus, there are no toilet facilities on board - the bus does make a couple of stops only so you do need to consider your kids and elderly in this circumstances.

You could also consider taking a train but trains are almost as expensive as taking the plane factoring in the fact you get dropped off in Butterworth and having to take the ferry across to Penang Island.

If you take the Aeroline coach, they have on board a toilet for small business.

Aeroline operates Singapore to KL; and KL to Penang. can check it out.
