Hi Luoli, Could have been lang Tengah or the Perhentian islands.

Am afraid there is no islands close to Kuantan; the nearest is a 1 hour drive to Dungun, and can reach Tenggol island, 13 km offshore. A great diving destination.

As for sailing, a good place is Kijal, only 35minutes from Cherating.

Just to give you a perspective: Terengganu is a state, with its capital city Kuala Terengganu(KT). The main areas/towns in the state of Terengganu, besides KT, are Cukai, Kijal, Paka (where two of the country's independent power producers are located), Dungun, Marang (jump off point for Kapas island), Merang (jump off point for Redang island), and finally Kuala Besut (jump off point for Perhentian islands).

Kuantan is the capital city of the state of Pahang(the largest state of Peninsular Malaysia). Main coastal towns of Pahang are Kuantan, Cherating, Pekan and Tg Gemuk (jump off point for Tioman island, besides Mersing, which is in the state of Johor).

So, "nearer one" -Pulau Tenggol (pulau means island in Malay), and sailing at Kijal.

Wind conditions are strong towards the monsoon period--late Sept onwards, until late Feb, with highest windspeed in Dec, when the Monsoon Cup regate is also held.
