Self drive trip hiroshima and shinkoku

Dear All:

I like to ask recommendation for self drive trip include both Hiroshima and shinkoku (19/11-26/11). My trip will start from Hiroshima ( 2days) and then drive to shinkoku for 6 days with last day back to Hiroshima (25/11) as my flight start & end there. Whole trip will be rental car. I need a few suggestion here:

My current idea is Hiroshima -> Matsuyama -> Kochi -> Takushima -> Takamatsu --> Hiroshima

1). How is cost of toll charge from Hiroshima to Shinkoku? Understand it is driving via bridge

2). I heard toll charges within shikoku island is quite expensive. Shall I purchase ETC pass first?

3). Any suggest itinerary as I am not sure which place to allocate the hotel on each day.

Thanks a lot!

ETC is not equal to expressway pass.

SEP will save much on your itinerary. Honshi bridge toll is not covered, though.

<<1). How is cost of toll charge from Hiroshima to Shikoku? Understand it is driving via bridge>>

The tolls are

8,500 yen(ETC, 6,560 yen) from Hiroshima to Matsuyama,

3,670 yen(ETC, 3,670 yen) from Matsuyama to Kochi,

3,830 yen(ETC, 3,830 yen) from Kochi to Tokushima,

2,060 yen (ETC, 2,060 yen) from Tokushima to Takamatsu, and

8,310 yen (ETC, 6,360 yen) from Takamatsu-Chuo(central) to Hiroshima (via Seto Chuo Do(Seto Central Expressway).

Thus, in total 22,540 yen (ETC, 18,650 yen). The toll are particularly expensive when you run the 2 bridges

which connect Hoshu(Main) Island and Shikoku Island.

You should use the car with an ETC card. Here is a site to explain about ETC card.

You should ask your rent a car company if you can make your own ETC card, or rent an ETC card.

* It's good to rent a cycle and cycle the Shimanamikaido when you go from Hiroshima to Matsuyama, as follows.

* At Matsuyama, it's good to stay at an Onsen Ryokan at Dogo Onsen, and also don't forget to visit the Matsuyama Castle, as follows.

* When you return to Hiroshima, step by Kurashiki's Bikan Area to see its old canal: especially its Ohara Museum is great. Also, step by an old port town, Tomonoura, as follows.

Dear Maibei:

For this 9 days, is there any other route Itinanery to recommend with less expensive toll charges? Hiroshima is start and end point. How about north Kyushu area? Or Hoshu island itself like Kobe and Osaka area etc?

If Shikoku is not a must consider the lovely region of Chugoku. We did a road trip of the Sanyo and Sanin regions and fully enjoyed the driving experience. We too were there around the latter half of Nov and met with beautiful autumn foliage.

You can follow this suggested driving route as an example, although I would also recommend setting aside 2 days for driving in Iya valley, which has many attractions and onsens worth visiting.

tourismshikoku.org/itineraries/drive.html.

In my opinion, you would miss the point of a self-drive holiday in Shikoku if you rush from city to city using the highways. The charm is in driving the coastal and country roads.
