Driving tour of Wakayama and Mie Prefectures

I will be driving from Wakayama City to Shirahama, then to Ise and finally to Hashimoto, Wakayama Pref. Would appreciate suggestions for things to do and see along these routes. We are a couple both 72 years of age from Hawaii. Will be spending 2 nights at each location.

Because you are coming from Hawaii, I assume that you will probably enjoy mountain places, such as Mt. Koya-san, Kumano Kobo, more than beaches, such as Shirahama, in Wakayama Prefecture.

A straight drive from Shirahama to Ise is 3.5+ hrs and even if you don’t mind the long drive you will miss out some nice sites on the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula. Time allowed consider following the coast and visit places like Kushimoto, Cape Shionomisaki, Katsuura, Nachi, Shingu, Kumano, Onigajo and the Shima Peninsula.

I like Kushimoto, the southernmost point of Honshu. Very interesting U.S.-Japan museum in which the officers of the merchant vessel Lady Washington sought to "open" Japan years before Perry.

Despite the infamy, Taiji is actually pretty interesting, and one will find that at least some of the town's whaling history is related to Hawaii. Very nice people, but wary of Greenpeace types.

Thank you all for help, or as we say in Hawaii, kokua(help)

Anyone traveled thru Dorokyo Gorge and surrounding area. Thinking of veering in from coastal drive and see Dorokyo before spending the next 2 nights at an Ise ryokan

We had driven to Dorokyo Gorge but we didn’t take any boat ride as the weather was wet and misty on that particular day. The scenery is good and below (the latter half) are some of our trip photos in that part of Kii Peninsula.
