Bungalow style accommodation Khao Lak

We are thinking of visiting Khao Lak for the first time for about 5 days in April. Can anybody advise us where to stay, bungalow style accommodation up to about 2500baht per night? We would like to get out to the Similian Islands and snorkel/dive from Khao Lak, is this easy to organise? Hope you can help, thanks, Arabella

Have a look at

for a list of hotels/resorts. If there are any that take your fancy come back her or post any questions on our Local Expert's great forum at khaolaklovers.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1

Plenty of tour operators and dive shops in Khao Lak to get you to the Similans (and back!)

Very easy to organize. Just ask your resort reception desk, or what is usually cheaper is going into Khao Lak town to one of the dive shops. Getting to Similan islands is very very easy to set up though, you will have no problems.

This is all good news, thank you. I will now try to find somewhere to stay and definitely base ourselves there to get out to the Similans, if anyone has a good experience of accommodation, please let me know. Thanks a lot Arabella

From the list on the link in my previous post, one resort which meets your price range and bungalow style and has received good reports is the Ayara Villas.

We have just returned from Khao Lak, and loved it. We stayed at the Andaburi Resort on the main road in Nang Thong beach, and it was lovely - it cost about 2200 baht per night for a villa. It will cost less in April, as prices go down in May.

We had a look at Nang Thong, Bang Niang and Kuk Khak beach, and I think Nang Thong beach is probably the prettiest - it has some lovely rocks areas and the snorkelling isn't too bad either. There are several beachfront restaurants along Nang Thong, and it is very laid-back. Watching the sunset was breathtaking, and it was good to have some rocks in the foreground of our photos. Bang Niang and Khuk Khak were nice too, but the hotels/restaurants on those beaches were much more expensive, and the beach at Bang Niang was just a straight long beach, no rocks. Khuk Khak beach was more interesting, with a little inlet where longtail boats are anchored.

There are also some very reasonable hotels right on the Nang Thong beachfront with rooms or bungalows around 1200 baht upwards (eg Khao Lak Green Beach Resort). You can try khaolak.de/khaolakbeach/eNangThongBeach.htm for some more info.

There are also plenty of restaurants/shops along the main road of Nang Thong road, and you should try the banana/coconut or pineapple pancakes that are made every night from a little stall outside the main minimart. Deeelicious!

You can hire a motorbike to check out the other villages for around 180 baht per day. They probably aren't within walking distance unless you are really fit and enjoy walking in very humid hot weather!

We definitely recommend snorkelling in this area. We have now done two trips to the Similan Islands, and the snorkelling is fantastic - last time we snorkelled we also saw turtles. Lots of fish, lots of coral, very clear water, and the scenery is just amazing. The speedboats take you to about 4 different locations, with different fish and coral in each area.

Haven't dived there, but I understand it's one of the top 10 diving locations in the world. There are plenty of dive shops/travel agents in the Nang Thong area, and you should be able to barter to a reasonable price. For the snorkelling trips, they start at about 3000 baht, but you can get them down to around 1800-2000 per person. Book a speedboat rather than a large slower boat, cos there are just too many people on the larger boat - gets a bit claustrophobic!

You won't have any problem finding accommodation if you stay at Nang Thong beach - lots of options, lots of different rates, and the place wasn't terribly busy when we were there. We just got back on Saturday.

Chok dee (good luck),

Sylvs
