duty free from Thailand to Australia.

A friend flew out of Phuket airport two weeks ago, and tried to purchase some duty free alcohol to be told he could only take 100ml to Australia. He said surely not, and they would not sell him any.

We are flying in and out of Bangkok in the coming weeks. Is this the same?

Is this true?

Thanks in advance.

Suggest you buy your duty free at your Australian departure airport and collect it on arrival back in Australia. No huge price difference and much more convenient.

The Australian Government requires all Duty Free purchases of liquids/spirits in excess of 100mls to be put in a tamper proof sealed bag at Duty Free and collected by the purchaser at the gate. If the airport does not provide that facility, and Phuket Airport doesn't, any you do purchase at Duty Free will either not be supplied or if it is it will be confiscated at the gate.

In addition to purchasing at home before you leave, you can purchase cheaper than Duty Free in Suprmarkets and Wine shops in Phuket and pack in your checked in luggage.

I agree that there is very little financial advantage in buying Duty Free at Phuket airport over buying on arrival (or prior to departure) at Sydney. And it is actually cheaper in Sydney (for many items) if you buy one of their "2 bottle specials".

King Duty Free at Phuket airport will now sell duty free liquor to Australian bound passengers (sealed, for collection at the gate) ... but only to Jetstar passengers on a direct flight to Sydney or Melbourne.

I have this in writing from King Duty Free should anyone like a copy.

It's correct that you can't buy in Phuket for transit to Australia via another airport. However, you should be able to buy whilst in transit in Bangkok providing you are then boarding a direct flight to Austalia and providing that Bangkok duty free will deliver to the the gate (which they did last time I transited).
