November 2016 - 3 centre - Bangkok, Aonang, Kaho Lak

We are a couple, around 50 years old looking to travel to the Far East for the first time, end of November this year, for around 16-18 nights.

We are independent travellers usually, road trips round the USA, or exploring in Europe, and like local culture and food, national parks and nature, beaches and snorkelling, driving around and exploring.

We would like to travel business class, the cheapest method, which leads us to EVA air, travelling to Bangkok. Or Thai Air have a sale on now :)

We generally like to have our own accommodation, private villa/house not hotels, but this time may make an exception.

We looked into HuaHin a little and thought this may be ok, although beaches do not appear to be beautiful white sandy ones, and we figured with that much time, we may be best doing 2 or 3 stops.

We don't tend to like cities, but we are told that Bangkok is a must see!

So we have come up with -

Arrive Bangkok 17 November

3 nights Rembrandt hotel, 2 days sightseeing

Arrive Aonang, Krabi 19 November

8 nights Centara Anda Dhevi

Boat trips, snorkelling, temples, chilling

Arrive Khao Lak 27 November (road transfer)

8 nights Merlin Resort

More sightseeing and chilling.....

Can you offer any thoughts please!? So much appreciated, if you can.

Are Aonang / Khao Lak too similar? Should we drop one and head to Chiang Mai instead of Aonang maybe?

(should I post this elsewhere?)

I am narrowing it down, bit by bit!

Many thanks :)

Khao Lak and Ao Nang are quite different. Khao Lak comprises a coastline 25km long with 9 different beautiful beaches, Khao Lak Beach where the Merlin is located being the first one you reach coming from Phuket or Krabi. Ao Nang is the main beachfront location for mainland Krabi, more commercialised than Khao Lak, great as a centre for tours to the lovely four off-shore islands but its own beach not being that nice.

See pics of Khao Lak's beaches from last High Season including Khao Lak Beach at https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g297…

Khao Lak is a great centre for tours, including to Krabi, and you can see pics of the popular ones at https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g297…

Given ther opportunity to see both destinations from Khao Lak you may wish to consider revising your itinerary to:

* Fly to Bangkok for 3 Nights

* Fly non-stop to Chiang Mai, either from the main airport (BKK) or Don Muang (DMK) from where Low Cost Carriers AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Smile (sometimes as well as BKK) fly for 4 nights

* Fly non-stop from Chiang Mai to Phuket Airport then on to Khao Lak 12 nights, which you could still split with Ao Nang if you want then return to Phuket Airport to Bangkok for flight home,

We stayed at Krabi resort Ao Nang in a Luxury Grand room which was great as they are the only true resort on the beach, so you can have your breakfast in peace on the beach front restaurant and afternoon drinks on a deck chair watching the sun set. we felt that this relaxed vibe would be lost at the other resorts as you would step out the front door into the very busy hustle and bustle. in our case you could have true peace or step into the hustle and bustle at your convenience.

thanks for this, I've been looking at everything, and also got the go-ahead from my boss for a full three weeks!! woo hoo.

So now, I'm thinking -

Fri 19 Nov - fly BKK, land Sat. 3 nights Bangkok.

Tue 22 - fly to Chiang Mai - 5 nights

Sun 27 - fly to Phuket, haven't decided on how long each place, but leaning towards Khao Lak more, maybe all.

Fri 9 Dec - leave evening, Phuket for midnight flight out of BKK back to London.

This plan is coming together slowly.

Will always listen to other opinions though...!

I did wonder about sticking Bangkok at the end of the holiday, so there's only the one flight home.....? Or will we be frazzled after Bangkok!?

Nanight folks, off up the wooden hill.... :)
